The megacity Rises to Toxic Haze Post Festival of Lights

Tuesday brought citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered exposed to dangerously toxic air that registered in the "alarming" level.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels

Various sections of the city showed an air quality index above 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the recommended limit established by the WHO.

Particular areas, readings of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1800, equating to 15 to 20 times above safe limits.

Firecracker Restrictions and Current Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, officials had maintained a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the deadly pollution that blankets the metropolis as colder weather approaches.

Yet recently, the newly elected local leadership petitioned the judicial authority to request a modification of the prohibition.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically criticized by environmentalists as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "heritage and public health".

Court Ruling and Reality

Despite concerns of environmental and health advocates, the court approved the request, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during designated time windows throughout the Diwali.

Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable disregard of the time restrictions across the capital, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener version.

Several air quality sensors throughout the capital showed air quality peaking around late evening to some of the worst readings seen during the festival in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Implications

The proliferation of firecrackers during the festival also triggered a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani Punjab pointing to deteriorating air quality in Lahore on pollutants traveling from across the border following the celebrations.

Long-Standing Pollution Issue

Alarmingly severe levels of pollution in the city have persisted as a major issue for fifteen-plus years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

During the festival period, the amount of dangerous particulate matter in the atmosphere has been documented to shoot up to seventy percent above the worst readings ever documented in Beijing, which was previously viewed as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

Multiple Contamination Factors

This crisis in Delhi is attributed to a combination of various sources including transportation pollution, dust, development work, waste incineration and pollutants from farm burning in nearby states of Punjab and Haryana.

Within these states, agricultural workers illegally burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, producing dangerous haze that becomes contained over the city as winter air sets in.

Health and Economic Consequences

Both financial and medical consequences on the roughly thirty-three million people residing in the Delhi area is significant, according to multiple investigations.

These hazardous conditions causes increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can result in oncological diseases.

Air quality crisis is calculated to be accounting for 10,000 untimely deaths each year in the capital.
